Sick of those bare spots under your shady trees? Tired of a thin, sparse-looking lawn on the north side of your house? Does your lawn experience just as much shade as sun?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions — our Sun and Shade Grass Seed Mix is ideal for your shade-related lawn seed problems.

This uncoated seed mix is our most versatile and adaptable grass seed mix. It has a rich dark green color and a soft, comfortable feel that holds up well under traffic. It’s perfect for use around houses, parks, and sports fields that experience full sun to heavy shade.

This mix is very similar in quality to our Blue Ribbon Mix, but it tolerates heavy shade better with adding fescue and perennial ryegrass.

Nature’s Seed Sun and Shade Grass Seed

The easiest way to explain this grass seed blend is that it’s the most versatile mix because it can grow in nearly all conditions. With the right grass seeds, your lawn will be green in every area, regardless of how much sun it gets.

We use a unique blend of bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescues in our sun and shade seed mix. The specific combination we use consists of several cool-season grasses, like:

  • 60% Kentucky Bluegrass (3 varieties)
  • 20% Perennial Ryegrass (2 varieties)
  • 10% Hard Fescue
  • 10% Chewings Fescue

Let’s dig deeper into each of the cool-season grasses in this blend.

Grass Seed Type #1: Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky Bluegrass is an excellent addition to your lawn’s sun and shade grass seed because it handles foot traffic well and is a resilient seed. This high-traffic seed makes up 60% of the blend because of its durability and strength.

Kentucky Bluegrass Lawn

With three varieties of Kentucky Bluegrass included in this grass seed blend, you get a combination of seeds that thrive in both the sun and partial shade — giving your lawn the perfect green color you desire.

Grass Seed Type #2: Perennial Ryegrass

Much like Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass also prefers full sun exposure. It thrives in mild climates with well-drained, fertile soil. Up 20% of your new seed blend is comprised of perennial ryegrass.

With two different varieties, we’ve tailored the perennial ryegrass seed to mix in with shady seeds giving it the support it needs to grow while flourishing in sunny spots.

Grass Seed Type #3: Hard Fescue

There are many fescues available that we could include in our sun and shade grass seed mix, but we settled on two types, with one being Hard Fescue.

Hard Fescue Grass

Hard Fescue is a low-maintenance, high-tolerance tall fescue seed that grows in nearly any condition. Although this greener grass thrives in sunny spots, the dense shade aggressively spreads hard fescue.

Grass Seed Type #4: Chewings Fescue

The other fescue we’ve included in our mix is Chewings Fescue. This seed has a fine-bladed texture and grows upright, whereas Hard Fescue is a crawling growth.

Chewing Fescue Grass

Chewings Fescue gives a comfortable touch to your lawn as a softer grass, encouraging your family to spend more time outside with their toes in the grass.

How to Know if the Sun and Shade Mix Is Right for You

Several shade mix options are available if you’re looking to overseed your lawn or even start fresh – but deciding which grass plants are right for you can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know where to start.

Although the Sun and Shade Seed Mix sounds like the perfect seed blend for every lawn, you should consider the following points to determine if Sun and Shade Seed Blend are right for your property.

Consideration #1: Where Do You Live?

It should come as no surprise that not all grasses can grow in every part of the country. So although our sun and shade blend works well in various regions, it struggles in the southern part of the country because of the scorching sun. That is why we recommend only using this turf builder grass seed mix if you live in the central or northern part of the country.

Consideration #2: How Often Can You Water Your Lawn?

Every seed requires different amounts of watering to create a durable lawn. Our Sun and Shade Seed Blend requires plenty of water. And since cool-season grasses grow better in cooler climates, they need moist soil to help them grow, especially when you’re first planting the grass seed.

Consideration #3: What’s the Purpose of Your Lawn?

This question might sound strange, but if you’re using this seed blend for pasture grazing, you should reconsider your choice. That’s because this otherwise versatile mix is the best grass seed for lawns and homes. Between its durability, tolerance, and flexibility, the Sun and Shade Seed Mix is perfect for starting your new lawn or adding some additional growth.

Planting Sun and Shade Seed in Your Yard

Seeding your lawn is pretty simple, but there are some specific methods and ratings you should know about before you spread your seed:

  1. The first step is to till the earth, especially if you’re seeding for the first time. You want to mix up the first inch or two of soil. Tilling increases the oxygen in the soil, which helps your seeds grow well.
  2. After prepping your soil, it’s time to plant your seed. We recommend using a seeder so that you accurately spread the seeds and avoid clumping. A good seeding rate is 6 lbs. / 1000 ft², which allows the seed to germinate well and receive the water and oxygen it needs.
  3. Once you seed the entire area, mix up the loose soil and seed. You can use a rake or small gardening hoe for this. You want the loose soil to cover the seeds to help encourage growth.
  4. The final step is to water your lawn every day for the first couple of weeks to a month. The first few weeks of watering are crucial for a thriving lawn because the seeds need a burst of essential nutrients to jumpstart their growth. (Quick tip: You want the soil surface moist – but not muddy.)
